The UNITS CONVERTER Version 1.0
Program Description
There are several unit converter programs out on
the PC-market. I've always wanted a good one. My criteria
for good includes the following features and capabilities:
o The program should allow the user to select an unit
with the mouse, enter a value for that unit, and instantly see
a scrollable screen that displays the values of all related
units of the same type.
o The program should work concurrently with several
other programs, allowing the user to cut & paste numbers
across different applications such as wordprocessors and
spreadsheets.
o The program should include temperature con-
version such as Fahrenheit to Celsius etc.
o The number of engineering, business and scientific
units grow each year. A good unit conversion program must
allow the user to input new units and/or modify the values of
old ones.
I created the Units Converter version 1.0 to address
these features. The multitasking graphical environment of
Microsoft Windows 3.0 (tm) is an excellent platform with
which to satisfy the first two features. I've reserved the third
feature (and other enhancements) for version 3.0 of the
Units Converter. If you like version 1.0, in order to keep us
ShareWare programmers alive, ver. 3.0 is only available to
registered users who have paid the $ 25 registration fee.
Please see the "Registration" section below for additional
details.
INSTALLATION
Create a units directory on any drive using the mkdir
command:
mkdir /units
Change to this directory::
cd /units
Copy all of the supplied files to the units directory:
copy a:*.*
Start Windows and activate the Main window. Use the
"Windows Setup" command to finish installing the "Units
Converter" program.
PROGRAM OPERATION
One example should make the program operation "intuitively
obvious even to the most casual observer". Let's suppose
that you have just driven from San Francisco, Ca. to Los
Angeles and found that the distance was 396 miles. A
foreign exchange student, that you know, wants to make the
same journey but asks you for the distance in kilometers.
Your sister, who lives in San Francisco, also plans to join you
next week. She drives like Captain Kirk!
Start the program by double clicking the "Units Converter"
icon from Windows. Work from left -to-right on the program
window. Use your mouse to scroll the units type window
pane and select "Length" by clicking it. Move the mouse to
the next pane and click "miles". A message window opens
asking you for the number of "miles", its default value is 1.0.
Enter 396 and click "OK". The far right window-pane now
displays the equivalent of 396-miles in several scientific,
international and engineering units. Scroll the right pane to
locate the "kilometer" value of 637 km. Also, tell your sister
that light takes only 0.002 seconds to make the same journey.
A FEW ADDITIONAL NOTES
Clicking in the right window will change it to a yellow-back-
ground with black-foreground. Some people, and their
dogs, claim that this is more readable.
Accepting the default value of 1.0 for a selected unit displays
the relative values of the other units.
You can copy your calculations to the clipboard for use by
other Windows applications via the "Edit" menu bar.
THE ADDITIONAL FEATURES OF VERSION 3.0
"The Units Converter 3.0"
is an expanded version 1.0.
It also features the following
enhancements:
1. Hundreds of additional
international units.
2. You can add any new
units of your choice.
3. Number conversions;
such as Octal, Hex, etc.
4. Physical science, math,
engineering, and
other constants.
